While a few moths have passed since pops passing, it still seems pretty fresh. Tomorrow I start my journey to give dad his final tour to his favorite place in Canada.
I am flying out to Deer Lake/Cornerbrook tomorrow. I will be met by my dearest friend Emma and from there we will embark on a Newfie adventure. Dad will be meeting me in Cornerbrook on the Tuesday… He got a final road trip out of this deal.
Once dad has arrived I will be taking him to our favorite spot in Canada, Gros Morne National Park. Why you might ask? What a great question and to answer that, it’s….
STORY TIME!!!
Back in the summers of 2000 and 2001 my dad and I decided we would do a road trip each of those summers and see every province in the country. First year we drove out to Vancouver, it really made me appreciate the grandness of Ontario. Took days just to get out of the province.
We stopped in Winnipeg to see some good friends and spend some time there. Lake Winnipeg is gorgeous. Saskatchewan is flat and boring but Alberta was the opposite. We stopped to say hello to a friend in Calgary and proceeded to camp in Banff. We woke up to snow on our tent in August.
BC was stunning. The redwoods, mountains and the weather did not disappoint. We met up with a friend in West Vancouver and got a campground in Vancouver surrounded my high rises… no campfires 🙁
The trip back was uneventful with the exception of getting pulled over in Regina. I’ll never forget seeing a Camaro cop car drive thru a ditch just to pull us over. Then a jalopy that was dragging parts and had headlights tapped to the hood and my smart mouth told the cop “Why don’t you pull that safety concern over rather than us going 15 over to get passed it” the response to that was “ Can I get your drivers license.” I learnt a lesson for sure
The next year we travelled out east. We rushed through Quebec(obviously) and went to Sussex New Brunswick to see some friends. We hit the worst rainstorm ever in Turo, Nova Scotia and took cover under an overpass with Bikers.
Dad had to visit the CBC in Halifax because that was where his favorite weather lady was. The trip across to PEI was interesting. The bridge was so long there was a point I couldn’t see land in front or behind us. PEI was super expensive compared to the other provinces.
We went back to Nova Scotia and headed to Sydney to take the Ferry to Newfoundland. We crossed the Atlantic and ended up in Port aux Basques, the plan was to drive around the island to St John’s and go back on that Ferry. That didn’t happen.
Gros Morne happened. We stopped in Gros Morne National Park for the night. We then ended up staying until we had to turn around and go home. Gros Morne captured us, we both absolutely loved it. The views and the wildlife were spectacular.
Dad would be so excited to be going back there, it only made sense to leave some of him there. So stay tuned here as I do more stuff and bring everyone along for the ride.
